Gdynia harbour puts on the development

Port of Gdynia Authority SA - a company constituted by the Treasury and Gdynia commune - is responsible for the planned and harmonious harbour development. The priority of the company's activity, the enterprise of which has the statutory status of "the enterprise of public usefulness", is the optimum usages of harbour areas and infrastructure, its modernization and reconstruction as well as the improvement of harbour accessibility from the land side.

Harbour infrastructure (harbour water regions, landing piers, roads and railway tracks) is of public generally accessible infrastructure character and is rendered accessible to all the users on the equal conditions specified in the Harbour Dues Tariff.

The exploitation activity is however, led by its separate transactors, which lease from the Harbour Management storage areas by means of public tenders and which invest in their own reloading devices.

Within the limits of Gdynia sea harbour, which covers the area of 492,7 ha there are about 400 of different transactors acting - starting from reloading operators through production and repair shipyards to transport and tourist service providers.

"By means of harbour infrastructure development, we shall reach the appointed aims: new investors as well as stable and balanced development of service sector in Gdynia harbour".

Przemysław Marchlewicz,

The specialty of Gdynia harbour is container loads. The service of them is the domain of Baltic Container Terminal Ltd. (BCT) as well as the newly founded Gdynia Container Terminal S.A. (GCT). Today we serve 85% of Polish container reloads. Gdynia harbour is also, equipped in modern reloading devices, terminals of mass goods: Baltic Grain Terminal Ltd., (BTZ), Maritime Bulk Terminal Gdynia Ltd. (MTMG), as well as Baltic Bulk Terminal Ltd. (BBM), intended for the service of Polish chemical products export, especially fertilizers.

"Stena Line, which serves the line of Gdynia - Karlskrona by means of two ferries, in 2006 transported over 86, 8 thousands of shipment units (over 19% more than in 2005)"

Gdynia is a universal harbour with the predominance of piece-goods loads service. BTDG - Baltic General Cargo Terminal Gdynia Ltd. comprise for the connection of two terminals: ro-ro and piece-goods, offering re-loading technologies adjusted to multi-modal transport requirements.

Apart from constantly increasing goods turnover, Gdynia harbour notes down greater and greater traffic of passenger and good ferries on regular, year-round line Gdynia - Karlskrona.

Today, when tough competitiveness enforces the continuous modernization process as well as technology application, Gdynia Harbour ploughs resources in its own infrastructure in order to create for the customers the optimum conditions for service and functioning as well as to attract national and foreign investors. Since 2003 to 2006 Port of Gdynia Authority SA invested in the development the amount of 226,56 million PLN. Additionally, harbour companies (privatized as well as those which stay in capital group ZMPG-a S.A.) invested over 100 million PLN in reloading devices.

It shall also be added that within the same period of time (2003-2006) the reloads in Gdynia harbour increased from 9,74 to 14,2 millions of tonnes a year, that is for almost 46%.

The most important harbour investments for the nearest years

Port of Gdynia Authority SA appointed for financing for the years 2007 - 2013 in terms of Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment the realization of five investment undertakings for the total value estimated for 510 million net PLN:

Harbour development vision

"Keeping the stable and strong position of the Harbour in the Baltic region, as the leading one in piece-goods loads service, including mainly united, transferred in containers in ro-ro system, basing on the developed network of multi-modal connections with the backup as well as multiple lines of regular navigation of close access, ferry connections and excursion navigation. The strong harbour position shall result from assuring the suitable standards of people and loads service safety as well as environment protection safety, and also constant care for high efficiency and effectiveness of harbour functioning."

The strategy of Gdynia Harbour development until the year 2015

Components of the first investment phase will mostly concern: the main communication road, the system of railway side tracks, the car park for trucks, on-ground and underground infrastructure (including the transformation station) as well as the arrangement of water economy on the harbour development areas. The performance of the elements is the necessary internal condition for success in terms of attracting the investors to Gdynia. The external conditions, including the access to the investment area that is Kwiatkowskiego Route and A1 motorway are also extremely essential.

Up to this time, the Ministry of Sea Economy has classified two of our projects to the project lists, for which financial resources have already been reserved:

  • Ferry Base was signed on the list of the so-called big (above 50 million EUR) projects with strategic meaning, to be accepted by the European Committee (indicative list);
  • RO-RO Terminal signed on the list of smaller projects with strategic meaning, accepted by national administration.

Thanks to the realization of the ambitious tasks, terminals will now be able to much increase their turnover and bigger ships will be able to call at the harbour. There will also be much more place for the investors, who want to make good business in Gdynia.

Gdynia Harbour is the place, where the heart of sea economy beats strong.
