Kalisz - rationalisation means closure of sewage disposal system

Among the many needs of Kalisz, one of the most important ones is the closure of the sewage disposal system in order to expand it to cover those districts which today remain outside the system. This will happen in 2008.

It is worth stressing that over half of the total length of the sewage network in Kalisz is more than 30 years old and nearly 25% of the network is close to 60 years old. As a result, the sewage system in the eastern part of the town does not meet Polish and European Union environmental requirements which oblige Kalisz to teat all sewage generated in the town area. In response to this situation, the town planned an investment of over 16 million euros which envisages laying 100 km of sanitary sewers and stormwater drains and construction of 22 new sewage pumping stations. The project will help expand the sewage system in Kalisz to cover up to 93% of the town. The project will be co-financed from the Cohesion Fund.

Envisaged results of the project include:

  • liquidation of 14 outfalls which dump sanitary sewage into the river Prosna and its tributaries and creation of a sewage transmission system connected to the wastewater treatment plant,
  • conversion of the existing combined sewer into a storm drainage and construction of sanitary sewers and storm drains in the area of three residential districts: Majków, Chmielnik and Miła,
  • construction of sanitary sewers and storm drainage in Winiary residential district and a stormwater drainage in Szczypiorno and Piwonice residential districts.

The "Agreement for preparation and implementation of financial projects co-financed by the Cohesion Fund" between the Ministry of Environment and the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management and co-financing agreements between the National Fund of Environmental Protection and Water Management and the town of Kalisz were signed in September 2005. What has been done so far? A tender for engineering services has been prepared and announced. Also, a specification of conditions of contract for the contractor has already been made.

Thanks to the project, all wastewater disposed into the sewage system will be treated. The investment will allow us to separate the combined sewer system into a stormwater drainage and sanitary sewers in all parts of the town except for the town centre, where such a separation is impossible due to urban arrangement, and those districts for which spatial development plans have not yet been developed - says Andrzej Szajdziński, Head of Town Development and Investments Department in Kalisz Town Office, appointed Measure Authorizing Officer by Krzysztof Szamałek, secretary of state in the Ministry of Environment.
