Water supply company (PWIK) in Gliwice bets on quality
The total length of the water supply system in the area of operation of the company in four municipalities (Gliwice, Pyskowice, Rudziniec and Sośnicowice) is 785 km, of which 96 km are mains pipelines, 455 - distribution networks and 233 km connections to properties. The length of the sewage system is almost 454 km.
Water supplied by PWIK comes from two sources: about 85% from company's own deep wells of the Gliwice Triassic forms and almost 15% - purchased treated surface and underground water from the Upper Silesian Water Supply Company in Katowice.
Over the next few years the length of the water supply and sewage systems will be much extended. After completion of the Modernisation of Sewage Management in Gliwice in 2008 and completion by 2013 of stage two of the Modernisation of Sewage and Water Management, the sewage network will be extended by several hundred kilometres, especially in districts without sewage systems so far (both investments are co-financed from the EU Cohesion Fund). The company will face a major challenge in completing such major investments in time and managing such an extensive water supply and sewage systems. Despite the fact the tap water in Gliwice is among the best potable water in Upper Silesia that does not require boiling, the company makes it a priority to improve water quality. Four more deep wells are under construction also in the Gliwice Triassic forms: one in Żerniki and three in Czechowice (now the water is drawn from 19 deep wells in Gliwice, Ostrop and Wilcze Gardło, including one reserve well). Water from new wells will be pumped directly to the Water Treatment Plant in Łabędy where iron and manganese content is reduced and it is aerated and filtered in sand and gravel filters.
It should be noted that that the water intake in Wilcze Gardło is provided with active carbon filters protecting water against any contamination and improving its organoleptic features: taste, opacity and colour.
The company is facing another major investment in the near future, namely partial modernisation of the Central Sewage Treatment Plant. That will refer to e.g. utilisation of sludge that may no longer be used for any natural purposes due to increasingly strict regulations.
In 2008 PWIK will complete major investments that coincide with 10th anniversary of the company. on that occasion, there was a ceremonious meeting of the Management Board with the personnel, also attended by representatives of local authorities and invited guests. Long-term employees received gifts and diplomas. In warm words the CEO thanked all the employees for their contribution and commitment to the success of the company.
"It is thanks to you that our company is ranked ninth among several hundred water supply companies in Poland", said CEO Henryk Błażusiak. "We are proud that we have qualified and skilled employees and modern equipment. With such potential we can face most demanding tasks, in particular with respect to repairs of the water supply and sewage systems. With the most modern corrosion-proof materials we have greatly reduced the number of defects in the network. We are happy that the inhabitants are increasingly satisfied with our services and are less exposed to unpredictable problems", said the CEO.
After the official part, the employees of the company were offered lunch. The enormous jubilee cake was cut by the CEO to the sound of fireworks and a glass of champagne with wishes of success for the next 20 years - all those elements stressed the integration character of the event.
