Building Research Institute

The Building Research Institute conducts research and development works in construction safety, fire safety, safety and convenience of usage, energy conservation in buildings, protection from noise and vibrations, hygiene, protection of health and environment, durability of buildings, maintenance and modernization of buildings, and sustainable development in the building industry.

In recent years the Institute has put a lot of effort into the study of sustainable development in the building industry, including issues such as the impact of buildings on the environment and vice versa, and methods to assess this impact.

The Institute's scope of activities includes research conducted for commercial entities, local government bodies, and courts, which serves the purpose of assessing the technical state of buildings; study of buildings "in situ"; laboratory testing of products; and technical opinions and consultations in the area of all the specialties represented in the Institute.

A very important element of the Institute's activities are works on harmonizing the Polish standards and regulations with the standards and regulations of the European Union and research activities related to implementation of PN-EN standards in the domestic building industry.

On 1 May 2004, the Building Research institute obtained the status of a notified body of the European Commission and of EU member states, and is charged with completing tasks related to assessing conformance of building products in accordance with the 89/106/EWG directive in the area of:

• product certification,
• certification of factory production control,
• laboratory testing required for marking construction products with the CE sign.

The institute cooperates with non-governmental organizations, associations of commercial entities supporting the construction industry in Poland, and with international organizations. n
