Polish Energy Group
What does consolidation mean
The model of integrated activity includes the connection by the companies, the activities on different markets: electrical energy, gas, heat, water, and also in different sectors: production, circulation and distribution. The strategy allows cumulating the added value in the whole product chain. It also helps the greater risk control by means of connecting the regulated and competitive activity as well as neutralization of the economic situation deviations which often occur anti-synchronically on different product markets. n

Polish Power Group created from Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne SA, BOT Górnictwo i Energetyka SA, Zespół Elektrowni Dolna Odra SA and 8 distribution companies: Zakłady Energetyczne Okręgu Radomsko-Kieleckiego SA, Zakład Energetyczny Białystok SA, Zamojska Korporacja Energetyczna SA, Zakład Energetyczny Warszawa-Teren SA, Lubelskie Zakłady Energetyczne SA, Rzeszowski Zakład Energetyczny SA, Łódzki Zakład Energetyczny SA, Zakład Energetyczny Łódź-Teren SA is the biggest power energy company in Poland and the fundamental entity in the region of Central and East Europe. It is the modern managed, customer friendly power industry company.
The strategic aim of Polish Power Group is passing the way from the investment fund, which it de facto is nowadays, to the fully integrated company with harmonized business lines. The integration and values construction as well as getting the customers trust is the priority, especially in the face of the planned opening of the electric energy market and its stock debut.
From strategic point of view, it is one of the most important companies for the country business with the income which allows realizing the investment in the amount of 3-4 milliards a year. It shall also realize the safety demand of power industry state, as it shall have the production surplus over the distribution.
Challenges facing power industry
The demand for electric energy is increasing in Poland in the amount from 2, 5 to 3 per cent a year, what after the period of 10 years, gives the about 30 per cent growth of the power demand in the whole country. At the same time, it shall be necessary to renew 25-30 per cent of the production power. The investment demands of Polish power energy amount 5 to 7 milliards PLN a year. n

The challenges facing Polish power industry are very big. In Poland, about 40 per cent of generative devices are over 30 years old and more, and the increase of 1 per cent of Gross Domestic Product causes the growth of energy demand for about 1,25 per cent. Not only is the modernization needed, but also the construction of new generative powers. The activities carried out in terms of consolidation are necessary, as in hitherto prevailing structure of the sector, small power energy plants were too weak to get the credit for modernization and expensive investments as well as to meet the increasing competition.
Governmental program for electrical power engineering (accepted by the Cabinet in March 2006), in terms if which Polish Power Group was established, is the biggest sector reform in Poland after 1989. With such a complex undertaking, it is impossible not to face problems and dashing arguments. During the last years, in Polish electrical power engineering, sufficient changes have not been made. Further omission of reforms might lead to the decrease of the installed generative powers.
Another argument which speaks for the consolidation of power industry sector is the accession of Poland to the European Union. Since 1999, in the Union countries, a liberalization process in the power industry started. Big concerns increased their foreign activity and they apply for purchasing the shares in the enterprises in other countries. The creation of Polish Power Group, as a company which integrates mining, production, trade and distribution activities, is the optimum solution from the point of view of the desired model of running business in the power industry branch. The evidence of such is international experiences. It concerns both, the countries of West Europe (e.g. Germany, France, and Spain) as well as the Middle one (e.g. the Czech Republic).
A big integrated company is nowadays a necessary factor of the success in trading on power industry markets, where these are the brand, customers' base, credit rating, network and generative assets as well as risk management that are decisive.
Consolidation with the following sector privatization shall bring the benefits to the customers, employees as well as local communities. Local communities shall benefit because the investments, which shall appear in power industry as a result of the capital and new technologies inflow, shall encourage other investors to locate their enterprises on the area of the group activity.
The customers shall also benefit as the connection of the separately functioning companies shall bring some savings. They shall get a wider and much more modern range of services offered on the competitive market, especially, that the activities connected with the opening of the market to the individual receivers is one of the Polish Power Group's priorities. Care for the customers: high quality customer's service and assurance of power industry safety - this is how Polish Power Group sees its mission. For a couple of months, intensive works have been done on the preparation of the offer based on the uniform standards so that the proposal of PPG was more attractive and wider from the offers accessible up to this time.
And finally, the very enterprises shall benefit from the consolidation, either: they get the access to knowledge, technology and modern management methods. Consolidation then shall allow achieving the benefits to all its participants.
