A leader in quality management

Over the course of many years, SNG, the Gdańsk-based operator of the water supply and sewage runoff system for Gdańsk and Sopot, has placed great weight on quality management. In 2006, the company integrated all of its quality management systems - ISO 9001, ISO 14001*, and PN-N-18001 - into one QSE system. In October 2008, the company, as the first in Poland, was awarded certification for meeting ISO 24500 standards. SNG was placed among the most innovative companies in Poland in this year's LISTA 2000 rankings, which were compiled by the daily "Rzeczpospolita." The company was ranked number 46 in the country and number 3 in the region.

At the beginning of 2008, the company received the prestigious "Award of the Decade," which is granted to the most deserving winner from the previous ten editions of the Pomeranian Quality Award. It is awarded for implementing a management system based on quality, better known as TQM, or Total Quality Management. SNG was recognized for integrating three management systems - ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001* (environmental management) and standard PN-N 18001 (occupational health and safety management) - into one QSE (Quality, Safety, Environment) Integrated Management System. The requirements under this system are so stringent that the quality of the services of supplying water and sewage runoff for the Gdańsk-Sopot metropolitan area, which has more than half a million residents, serves as a prime example of the successful functioning of a public-private partnership in the provision of this type of service.

Besides providing water services for the cities of Gdańsk and Sopot, the company has, for the past several years, been offering engineering services, the use of its rainwater drainage systems and laboratory testing to outside entities. This has generated continuous growth in additional revenues. SNG operates a state-of-the-art central laboratory, which has received accreditation number AB216 from the Polish Accreditation Center. This accreditation confirms that the laboratory meets PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025 norms, which in turn serves as external confirmation attesting to the accuracy of tests and the professionalism of services provided by the lab.

SNG was established 16 years ago as the first Central European public-private partnership (PPP) project in municipal services. The partners in the Gdańsk PPP are: the Saur Group, a French leader in the outsourced management of water and sanitation services for local governments, with a 51% stake and the City of Gdańsk with a 49% stake. Today, the shareholders in the PPP are very pleased with how it operates, even as the PPP model continues to evolve, and the water quality in Gdańsk undergoes systematic improvement, something confirmed by city residents.
